Grand Prize Winner

Jahaziel Minor
David
Colored pencils on Illustration Board,
27 inches x 15 inches

Description
This drawing was inspired by the beauty and elegance of the plaster cast copy of "David with the Head of Goliath" by Eugene Delaplanche. This drawing was intended to function as an exercise to push my technical ability in regard to rendering and accuracy of form. I chose to position the cast against a brightly lit window in order to achieve an interesting play of light and shadow. This placement provided an excellent study for rendering front and side planes, and I intentionally chose a variety of surface textures to compose the still life. But what appealed to me as a draftsman was the challenge of capturing subtleties in the light of the cast's surface.

Art Markers – First Prize
First Prize Winner

David Alpert
Bodie Lighthouse- Outer Banks, North Carolina
Prismacolor Art Markers on Bristol board,
12 inches x 16 inches

Description
I used Prismacolor Art Markers to create this pointillist painting of the Bodie Lighthouse, Outer Banks, North Carolina. After making an outline drawing of the subject in light pencil, I applied thousands of fine dots of color using Prismacolor markers. The lightest and palest colors were applied first, for example, the sky was covered with dots of pale yellows and greys before the clouds and darker blues were added. This technique allows layering of colors and juxtaposition of complementary colors to create an impressionistic work that is uniquely pleasing to the eye. David completed this piece with over 1000 hours of meticulous work.

Bio
David Alpert, originally from Boston, MA, now resides with his wife Ashley in Virginia. He works in the health care industry and is the proud father of two college-aged sons, Sam and Max. He has a biology degree from the University of Virginia where he also minored in the studio arts. Art has always been a wonderful escape for him and he has focused his artistic efforts on perfecting his own self taught brand of pointillism. The array of color choices afforded by the Prismacolor art markers he uses has helped him reach previously unobtainable levels in quality and satisfaction with his artwork.

Pastels (Hard and Soft) – First Prize
Pastels Hard and Soft Winner

Robert Carsten
Concept and Composition
Pastel on Multimedia Art Board,
16 inches x 20 inches

Description
My pastel, "Concept and Composition" is an expression of my love for the process of conceiving and creating works of art. I used trompe l'oeil and other effects to recreate this studio still life. It shows the materials which I typically use to initially sketch my subject and design my composition - a sketchbook, black and white Nupastels, a charcoal pencil and erasers. My margin notes around the drawing include ideas for compositional adjustments and inspirational thoughts to help guide the separate, finished work. It is a painting within a painting, seemingly real, yet illusory - all is created in pastel.

Bio
An enthusiastic promoter of the pastel medium, Robert Carsten, is a signature member of the Pastel Society of America, the Connecticut Pastel Society, and an Honorary lifetime member of the Southwest Florida Pastel Society. He is a contributing writer for The Pastel Journal and the Artist’s Magazine. Robert has won many awards including the Best in Show at the Northeast National Pastel Exhibition, Best of Show at the Thorne Regional Juror's Choice Competition, Irene Hunter First Prize, Donald Kissel Memorial Award of Excellence, Robb Sagendorph Award, Academic Artists Award, and others. His paintings were featured on the cover of, and in the December, 2004 issue of The Pastel Journal and in Pure Color/ The Best of Pastel by North Light Books, in American Art Review. He is a much sought-after arts workshop instructor, national art exhibition juror and awards judge.

Graphite/Charcoal – First Prize
Graphite/Charcoal Winner

Jason Krause
Maura, II
Charcoal on Paper,
48 inches x 84 inches
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 443-955-1872

Description
Seven feet tall, it's part of a charcoal triptych. The piece was essentially an exercise in chiaroscuro, but I also wanted to see if I could tackle something that large and actually be able to handle it with some degree of control. It was completed in one 30 hour sitting punctuated by a short nap and a food break.

Pen & Ink – First Prize
Pen and Ink Winner

Rebecca Barmby
Aftermath of the party
Pen and ink on white arches hot press,
22 inches x 30 inches

Description
The brief for this work was to buy ten items from a convenience store and create a composition with them. I chose 'The aftermath of the party' as my theme. I drew my objects with a view taken from directly overhead. I experimented with different forms of mark making, ink washes and fine/medium ink nibs to create a piece which hopefully conveys the mess after a party and the clean up afterwards!

Mixed Media – First Prize
Mixed Media Winner

Jonathon Jackson
Drawings from the Studio and Mexico
Mixed media on canvas,
66.5 inches x 125 inches

Description
This painting is about images that are flowing into, through and from me. Specifically, it is a story about love, a relationship, a kiss; about the dark and light spaces we find ourselves in. I am consumed with exploring the line between chaotic and irrational impulses and ordered logic. I am drawn to the large scale, the physical, and the sculptural: that which is made by the human body. And I work through abstraction, layered imagery, stacked spaces and repetition.
