Tip for the taking:Creating detail in opaque media

View All Tips »

I am often asked how I create fine lines in pastel using with only a blunt stick. Because pastel is an opaque medium, I have 2 options. I can either attempt to draw a fine line or I can draw a broad line and then chisel into it with the negative space. Thinking about drawing with negative space can help your drawing skills and your compositions.
